the recaptcha system meant easy way plug in captcha site. side effect, helps digitizing books using image snippets scans visual challenge. if numbers should displayed, such “words” books used known numbers. void secondary objective of recaptcha (helping transcription of scans).

using numbers makes system less secure (in theory). whereas attacking ocr software might have difficulty telling apart g , 9, becomes unambiguous.
